To provide an optical fiber that is suitably applied in the case of arranging as an optical transmission line in a repeater section and that is capable of reducing fluctuation of transmission characteristics caused by change in the ambient temperature.
The optical fiber 10 is equipped with a core region 11, a clad region 12, a primary layer 13, a secondary layer 14, and a heat insulation layer 15 in this order from the inside. The core region 11 and the clad region 12 have SiO2 glass contained as the main component, and constitute a glass fiber. The primary layer 13 surrounds the clad region 12, the secondary layer 14 surrounds the primary layer 13, and the heat insulation layer 15 surrounds the secondary layer 14. The heat insulation layer 15 has a small heat conductivity, suitably, a heat conductivity smaller than that of the air and, more suitably, a heat conductivity of ≤0.02 W/mK. The heat insulation layer 15 is, for example, composed of glass fibers.
