To provide an optical film small in a residual phase difference, having excellent optical characteristics and high surface smoothness, and suitable as a protecting film, to provide a method for producing the film, to provide the optical film which has good adhesiveness to other materials, is high in the uniformity of phase difference (retardation) giving to transmitted light, has the phase difference characteristics hardly affected by temperatures and humidity of environments, has excellent temporal stability, reduces a residual phase difference on the production of the film, and is useful as an optical member for liquid crystal displays and the like, and to provide the method for producing the same.
This optical film of the present invention is characterized by comprising a thermoplastic resin composition comprising a ring-opened (co)polymer of a cyclic olefinic polymer having hydrocarbon groups and polar groups as substituents and a hydrocarbon resin which is solid at ordinary temperature and has a specific mol. wt. The method for producing the optical film of the present invention is characterized by forming a film from the thermoplastic resin composition by a melt-forming method or solution casting method, subjecting the film to a solvent-removing process, and then thermally treating the obtained film.
