To obtain an optical material excellent in various properties by using a product of hydrogenation of a homopolymer of 1,3-cyclohexadiene or of a copolymer of this monomer with another comonomer.
This material consists of a hydrogenation polymer obtained by hydrogenating at least 50% of the C-C double bonds of a polymer having a main chain represented by the formula: [-(A)a-(B)b-(C)c-(D)d-(E)e-] and having an Mn of 5,000-5,000,000, a light transmittance of 87% or above, and a Tg of 210-250°C. In the formula, A to E are monomer units which constitute the main chain of the polymer and may be arranged in arbitrary order, (a) to (e) are each the wt.% of each monomer based on the total weight of A to E, the sum of (a) to (e) is 100, 60≤a≤100, and (b), (c), (d), and (e) satisfy 0≤b, c, d, or e<40). A is a 1,3-cyclohexadiene monomer unit, B is a chain-like conjugated diene monomer unit, C is a vinylaromatic monomer unit, D is a polar monomer unit; and E is an ethylene/α-olefin unit.
