Abstract:
PURPOSE:To miniaturize a unit by giving an integrated waveguide structure to a three-direction transmission element. CONSTITUTION:When a conductor B1in is connected to an input port 21 of a multiplexing and demultiplexing element with respect to the connection constitution between the multiplexing and demultiplexing element in a branching unit 13 and fiber conductors, propagated signal components lambda1 and lambda2 are demultiplexed and are emitted to output ports 28 and 30 respectively. The component lambda1 is emitted to a port 34 from a port 28 through a port 27 if the port 28 is connected to a port 27. When fiber conductors A1out and C1out are connected to ports 30 and 34 respectively, the wavelength lambda1 is used to enable transmission from B to C, and the wavelength lambda2 is used to enable transmission from B to A. Similarly, the wavelength lambda1 is used to enable transmission from A to B, that from B to C, and that from C to A, and the wavelength lambda2 is used to enable transmission from B to A, that from A to C, and that from C to B. Thus, the branching unit is miniaturized because the three-direction optical multiplexing and demultiplexing function is realized with the micro-sized element.
