PURPOSE: To enable the recording and erasing of information to be carried out at a high speed, by providing a recording layer consisting of a polyatomic compound existing in a single phase and in a substantially ternary or more crystalline state.
CONSTITUTION: In reference to a phase rule in thermodynamics, a ternary single phase has 2 degrees of freedom in its composition in addition to a temperature ; this means the properties that it has less possibility of phase separation than a binary compound when the composition of the single phase is fluctuated. Therefore, this properties allows a single phase composition to be realized in a relatively easy manner when a recording layer 1 is formed, acts effectively to a local fluctuation in composition occurring during repeated recordings and erasings, stabilizes the recording and erasing characteristics for keeping the single phase, and enhances the reliability. By making a crystallizing phase as a single-phase, the short-distance dispersion of bond-length order causes a rapid growth of crystallization in the crystallization from an amorphous state, and the crystallization of the same crystalline structure results in a small strain and an easy nucleation. In this manner, the erasing speed of an optical recording medium made of single phase is higher than that of a conventional medium accompanied with phase separation.
