To provide an optical rotary encoder capable of making it easier to fix the light-emitting element and to adjust the position of the same.
The optical rotary encoder is provided with the light-emitting element 8 stored in a can 8a provided with a projection 8b for positioning, the cylindrical light-emitting element holder 10 for storing the can 8a and the lens 9, and the power source circuit substrate 7 for mounting the light-emitting element 8, for making the positional adjustment of the light-emitting element 8 and the lens 9 possible. The recess 10a for engaging with the projection 8b of the can 8a at the end part of one side of the light-emitting element holder 10, the projection 10b on the other end face and the step part 10c for resting a lens are respectively provided, and further the notch for engaging with the projection 10b of the light-emitting element 8 and the light-emitting element holder 10 on the power source substrate. Thereby, the positional adjustment is made easy because the mounting operation of the light-emitting element 8 becomes easy to reduce the dispersion of the positional deviation.
