To accomplish an optical system capable of attaining the further reduction of thickness and the more stabilization in terms of tolerance and assemblage by enhancing a degree of design freedom by introducing a transmission dioptric system as the most of the optical system while using a catoptric system, and also, by giving properties to the reflection surface of the catoptric system.
The optical system comprises a first optical system 102 including at least one dioptric system and a second optical system 104 including at least one catoptric system. The first optical system 102 and the second optical system 104 are arranged in order from a side close to a light valve 101. The first optical system 102 and the first reflection surface 103 of the second optical system have an arrangement relation of interposing a normal line drawn from the center of an image surface 106 between them, the first reflection surface 103 of the second optical system has negative or positive power, and a distance between the image surface and the reflection surface behind the image surface can be reduced, then, the further reduction of thickness in the depth D of the whole system can be attained.
