Abstract:

PURPOSE: To prevent deterioration in the S/N by sending a signal light processed into a non-polarized light from a non-polarization light source so as to suppress polarization dependence of a loss on a transmission line.
CONSTITUTION: A signal light outputted from a light source 21 is fed to a polarizer 22, from which a linearly polarized signal light is obtained and it is fed to a beam splitter 23a of a polarization release unit 23. The received signal light is equally branched while keeping the polarization state, one linearly polarized light is delayed by an optical delay section 23b and inputted to a multiplexer 23c, and the other linearly polarized light is inputted to the multiplexer 23c without a delay. The multiplexer 23c multiplexes both the signals orthogonally and provides an output of non- polarization signal and the signal light subjected to non-polarization processing is modulated by an electric field absorption modulator 24 and the modulated signal is sent to a receiver side via a transmission line. Thus, the power of the signal light subjected to non-polarization processing sent on the transmission line is divided equally to orthogonal polarization optical components thereby avoiding timewise change in the ratio of the power to each polarized optical component.
