To provide an optical tweezers apparatus capable of rapidly moving a light condensing position after an object lens in an optical axis direction and generating a plurality trapping center points in the optical axis direction.
The optical tweezers apparatus comprises: a laser source 8 generating a parallel ray; an object lens 11; and a variable-focal length lens 10. The optical tweezers apparatus has an effect for trapping a microscopic object at a point where light is condensed. The variable-focal length lens 10 includes two fundamental unit elements, and a polarization rotating element for rotating linear polarization by 90 degrees. The fundamental unit element includes: an electrooptical material composed of monocrystal having inversion symmetry; and two or more pairs of a positive electrode and a negative electrode formed on a surface of the electrooptical material. The variable-focal length lens is a cylindrical variable-focal length lens which can change the focus of light passing therethrough by changing an application voltage, and in which the two fundamental unit elements are arranged so as to form an angle of 90 degrees about an optical axis to each other.
