Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the optical waveguide device having high performance by epitaxially growing a dielectric crystal thin film having the Curie temp. higher than the growth temp. of epitaxial growth on a dielectric crystal substrate. CONSTITUTION:This device has the dielectric crystal substrate 1 polarized in one direction and the dielectric crystal thin film 2 which is epitaxially grown by a liquid epitaxy method on one main surface of the dielectric crystal substrate 1, is polarized in the direction opposite from the one direction and has the Curie temp. higher than the growth temp. of epitaxial growth. Namely, the thin film 2 of LiNbO3 polarized in the direction opposite from the polarization direction of the substrate 1 formed with periodic rugged patterns is formed on the +c surface of this substrate 1, by which the optical waveguides having the nearly ideal periodic polarization inversion structures are formed. The nonlinearity of the optical waveguides is intrinsic to the LiNbO3 crystal. The high-performance optical waveguide device having the high efficiency of second harmonic wave generation (SHG) of light is obtd. in this way.
