Abstract:
PURPOSE:To obtain the optical waveguide which has high resistance to optical damages, a decreased optical propagation loss and high efficiency by continuously and gradually decreasing the refractive index distribution of a proton exchange optical waveguide layer in the depth direction of a substrate. CONSTITUTION:The surface of an LiNbO3 crystal substrate 1 is subjected to a known proton exchange treatment and is thereby formed with the optical waveguide layer 2 which is then subjected to a heat treatment under specific conditions. Such a refrac tive index distribution in which the refractive index (n) of the optical waveguide layer 2 decreases continuously and gradually in a depth (y) direction from the surface thereof and substantially attains DELTAn=0 at the boundary with the substrate 1 is formed where the difference between the refractive index ns of the substrate 1 and the refrac tive index (n) of the optical waveguide layer 2 is designated as DELTAn(n-ns) and the depth from the surface of the substrate 1 as y. The optical deflector of high efficiency and the optical integrating head which is small in size and weight and allows high- speed accessing, etc., are, therefore, obtd. by using such optical waveguide.
