Abstract:
NEW MATERIAL:A compound expressed by formula I (X is 4W18C alkyl, alkoxy or halogen; R* is 4W18C optically active alkyl; formula II indicates that O may be linked to either one of N on the left and right sides).
EXAMPLE: 4-Fluoro-4'-(2-methyl-butyloxy)-azoxybenzene.
USE: A liquid crystal composition, assuming chiral smectic C phase and exhibiting ferroelectric property and high-speed response and low-voltage driving of optical switching elements.
PREPARATION: A compound expressed by formula III is reacted with a peracid e.g. peracetic acid or m-chloroperbenzoic acid, in a solvent, e.g. hexane, to give the aimed compound expressed by formula I.
