PURPOSE: To obtain a new low viscosity, liquid-crystalline and colorless optically active compound and composition excellent in chemical stability and useful for optical switching elements capable of responding at thigh speeds in wide temperature ranges and used for displays, etc.
CONSTITUTION: The optically active compound of formula I [R1 is F, (1-10C alkoxy group-substituted) 1-18C alkyl; X is single bond,-O-; m is 0, 1, preferably 0; when m is 1, the ring A is (mono-or difluorinated) 1,4-phenylene, pyrimidin-2,5- diyl, etc., the ring b, the ring C are independently (mono-or difluorinated) 1,4- phenylene, etc.; R2 is 1-18C alkyl, * is asymmetric carbon]. For example, (R)-1-(4-cyanophenyl)-1-decyn-4-ol. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting an aromatic halide of formula II (Z is Br, I) with an optically active 1-alkyn-4-ol of formula III and subsequently reacting the reaction product with a compound of formula IV. The liquid crystal composition contains the compound of formula I preferably in an amount of 1-30wt.%.
