NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I [R1 is 3-14C alkyl, alkenyl or alkynyl; R2 is 1-10C alkyl, 2-10C alkenyl or alkynyl: group of formula II is 5- to 8-membered ring; Q1 is single bond, (thio)ether bond, carboxylic acid ester bond, carbonyl bond, etc.; Q2 and Q3 are Q1 or methyleneoxy bond; M is group of formula III or formula IV (X and Y are single bond, carboxylic acid ester, methyleneoxy or ethylene group; the rings A to C are 6-membered ring-1,4-diyl)].

EXAMPLE: cis-(1R,2S)-2-methoxycyclopentane-1-carboxylic acid 4'-octyloxy-4- biphenyl ester.

USE: A ferroelectric liquid crystal compound having high spontaneous polarization. It has excellent quick response and memorizing characteristics.

PREPARATION: A compound of formula I wherein Q2 is normal ester bond [-C(=O)-O-] can be produced e.g. by reacting a carboxylic acid of formula V with an optically active dichiral alcohol of formula VI.
