Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:An optically active compound expressed by formula I [either of rings (a) and (b) is polyhalogen ring containing total 4 F or F and Cl atoms; when ring (a) is the polyhalogen ring, ring (b) contains at least one F or Cl; L is -COO- or -OCO-; Q is -COO- or -O-; R1 and R2 are ≥4C alkyl; at least either of R1 and R2 is optically active group].

EXAMPLE: 4'-[3-Fluoro-4-(2-methylbutyloxycarbonyl)phenyloxycarbonyl]- tetrafluorophenyl 6-decyloxypyridine-3-carboxylate.

USE: Useful as one component of liquid crystal compositions and responsive at a high speed when used as a display element due to great spontaneous polarization within a wide temperature range.

PREPARATION: A compound expressed by formula II is converted into a compound expressed by formula III, which is then reacted with a compound expressed by formula IV and passed through several steps to afford the compound expressed by formula I.
