NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I [R1 is 1-18C alkyl, alkoxy, alkoxycarbonyl, alkanoyloxy or alkoxyalkyl group; R2 is 1-20C alkyl; (m) is 0 or 1; ring A and ring B are groups shown by formula II (X is H, Cl or CN), groups shown by formula III to formula V, etc.; Z is COO, OCO, CH2O, OCH2 or single bond; ring C is group shown by formula II or formula VI].
EXAMPLE: (S)-N-Butyl-N-methyl-2-[4-[4-(4-octyloxyphenyl) benzoyloxy]phenyl]propaneamide.
USE: A material for ferroelectric liquid crystal display having excellent responsibil ity and memory.
PREPARATION: A carboxylic acid shown by formula VII is converted into an acid chloride and then reacted with a compound shown by formula VIII in the presence of a basic substance to give a compound shown by formula I. The compound shown by formula VIII is new and obtained by reacting an optically active propionic acid derivative shown by formula IX (R3 is lower alkyl) and a secondary amine shown by formula X in the presence of a condensa tion agent and then dealkylating.
