Abstract:

NEW MATERIAL:The optically active pyrazine compound of formula I (R1 is 6-18C alkyl; R2 is 1-12C alkyl; m is 0 or 1; n is 0 or 1; C labeled with *is asymmetric carbon atom).

EXAMPLE: 4-(2-Dodecyloxypyrazin-5-yl)benzoic acid (R)-4 [1-(2-methoxycarbonyl) ethoxycarbonyl]phenyl ester.

USE: An electro-optical element. It has excellent physical and chemical stability and gives a liquid crystal having low liquid crystal temperature range and high response by itself or as a mixture with other compound.

PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting an optically active phenolic compound of formula II with a carboxylic acid of formula III or its acid chloride.
