PURPOSE: To obtain the subject new compound useful as a liquid crystal material for an electro-optical element, having high simultaneous polarization and excellent high-speed responsiveness.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I [Rf is a 1C or 2C fluoroalkyl; R1 is a 3-20C (branched) alkyl; R2 and R3 are each an alkyl, etc.; R4 to R6 are each H, a 1-5C (branched) alkyl, etc.; X1 is COO, OCO, O, etc. ; X2 is X1 excluding O, etc.; X3 is COO, CH2O, etc.; A and B are each a (substituted) 6-membered ring-containing group; * is an asymmetric carbon; (n) is O or 14 or a compound of formula II such as (2S,5S,6S)-tetrahydro-6-trifluoromethyl-2-(4"- hexyloxybiphenyl-4'-carbonyloxy-5-trimethylsiloxypyran. The compound of formula I wherein X3 is COO and (n) is 0 is obtained by reacting a compound of formula III (Hal is a halogen) with a compound of formula IV (TBS is t- butyldimethylsilyl).
