Abstract:

To provide an optically anisotropic film having a high wavelength dispersion of retardation and a liquid crystal display device providing a good black-and-white display using the film and having little dependence on angle of visibility.

This optically anisotropic film contains a polymer and at least one kind of compound represented by formula (I): R1-(B1)p-(A1)m-(B2)q-A2-(B3)r-(A3)n-(B4)s-R2 wherein R1 and R2 each independently represents hydrogen atom, fluorine atom, trifluoromethyl group or the like, A1, A2, A3 each independently represents furan-2 or the like whose hydrogen atom may be replaced by an alkyl group of one to ten carbons or fluorine atom, B1, B2, B3, B4 each independently represents an alkyl group or the like whose hydrogen atoms may be straight chained or branched, and (p), (q), (r), (s), (m) and (n) are each independently 0 or 1 with the proviso that (p), (q), (r), (s), (m) and (n) are not zero at the same time. The retardation of the optically anisotropic film (measured at wavelength of 550 nm) is 50 to 3000 nm. The α value of the optically anisotripic film as defined by formula II: α=RF/RD is 1.07 or more wherein RF is a value measured with a hydrogen F-line and RD is a value measured with the sodium D-line.
