To provide an organic electroluminescent element high in luminous efficiency, and drive with a low voltage.

The organic electroluminescent element has an organic compound layer between a pair of electrodes. The organic electroluminescent element is characterized by containing a compound represented by the following general formula (I) in the organic compound layer. In general formula (I), A1-A8are each an N atom or C-R1, and X1is an S atom or an O atom; R1is a hydrogen atom or a substituted group; the plurality of R1may be the same or different from one another; (m) is an integer of 2 or more; and L is a single bond or an m-valent linking group and linked to a C atom in A1-A8. When L is an aromatic hydrocarbon ring or aromatic hetero ring, the size of the ring is a five-membered ring or six-membered ring.
