This organic EL element includes: a positive electrode 21; a negative electrode 41; and a luminescent layer 30 sandwiched between the positive electrode 21 and the negative electrode 41, and containing an organic compound. The negative electrode 41 is formed by stacking a plurality of negative electrode layers formed of materials different from one another. A first negative electrode layer 41 out of the plurality of negative electrode layers contains Ag, O and Cs.
