PURPOSE: To obtain an indigo derivative, an organic magnetic material, manifesting magnetism despite an organic compound by reaction between an anthranilic acid derivative and lower fatty acid derivatives.
CONSTITUTION: An anthranilic acid derivative of formula I (R1 is H, lower alkyl or phenyl; R2-R5 are each H< lower alkyl, hydroxyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkylthio, halogen, amino, etc.) is reacted with a lower fatty acid alkali metal salt and the anhydride of this lower fatty acid at room temperature to 200°C followed by hydrolysis in an alkaline state (e.g. in the presence of NaOH), thus obtaining the objective indigo derivative of formula II. While almost all of magnetic materials are inorganic, the present indigo derivative manifests magnetism despite an organic compound.
