PURPOSE: To obtain an org. nonlinear optical material having high nonlinear optical characteristics without relaxation of orientation by constituting the material of such an electric field oriented polymer produced by heating a specified polymer while applying an electric field and then cooling the polymer while maintaining the electric field.
CONSTITUTION: The polymer is obtd. by the reaction of a carboxylic acid compd. and polyfunctional epoxy resin described below. The carboxylic acid compd. is expressed by formula I having one or more butadiene bonds in the molecule. In formula I, R1-R4 may be the same or different from each other and are substd. or unsubstd. aryl groups. The polyfunctional epoxy resin is expressed by formula II. In formula II, R5, R6, R7 may be the same or different from each other and are substd. or unsubstd. aryl groups and (n) is an integer to 100. The obtd. polymer is heated while an electric field is applied. Then the polymer is cooled while the electric field applied is maintained. Thus, the electric field oriented polymer is obtd. and is used to constitute the org. nonlinear optical material.
