PURPOSE: To provide an element which is long-lived in function and strength as an organic photovoltaic element.
CONSTITUTION: In a photovoltaic element, which has a constitution wherein electron receptive and donative organic substance layers for forming a rectifier junction are laminated, between two electrodes, at least one side of which is a light-transmitting electrode, and moreover, comprises a constitution wherein a protective layer is laminated on the surface of the element, the surface protective layer containing carbon or containing carbon as its main component is provided. Moreover, in the case where the film thickness of the surface protective layer is 50nm or thicker, a better result is obtained in the case where an intermediate layer is provided between the surface protective layer and the electrodes of the element.
