PURPOSE: To provide a polymeric organic substance having excellent non-linear optical activity or superpolarizability, which also has good film-forming ability and is soluble in an ordinary solvent, by preparing a polymer having a group containing an electron- accepting moiety as a side chain bonded to its repeating unit of a structure of a diisocyanate compound.
CONSTITUTION: This substance is represented by the formula, wherein R1 and R2 may be the same or different and are a 2-6C linear or branched methylene chain; R3 is a hydrocarbon group such as an aliphatic or aromatic group, e.g. a hydrocarbon residue of hexamethylene diisocyanate, diphenyl ether diisocyanate or the like; R4 and R5 may be the same or different and N or CH, or R4 and R5 may form together an acetylene type bond; Z1 and Z2 may be the same or different and are a phenyl, biphenyl or naphthyl group or the like having a substituent such as a lower alkyl, a halogen or an amino group; and A is an electron-accepting group such as a nitro or a cyano group, and is a polymer compound having a number average molecular weight of 1,000 to 15,000 and a weight average molecular weight of 3,000 to 100,000. It is an organic substance having non-linear optical activity which is useful for an interrupter, a modulator, a bi-stable two-way coupler and the like.
