PURPOSE: To obtain an ornament having superior weather resistance and maintaining the color for a long period by coating the surface of an ornament with a hard film transmitting visible light.

CONSTITUTION: The surface of an ornament such as a watchcase, lighter, brooch, necklace, ring, erring or tiepin is coated with a hard film transmitting visible light by CVD or other method to 300W5,000 thickness. The mirror finished substrate of the ornament is made of a metal, a sintered hard alloy, cermet, a superalloy, ceramics or opaque glass and the hard film is made of diamond, hard amorphous carbon, Al2O3, AlN, BN, Si3N4 or the like. A fine color is given to the ornament by interference colors produced by the substrate and the hard transparent film without scratching Au or other soft material forming the surface layer of the ornament and the discoloration resistance of the ornament is considerably improved.
