To enhance the adhesion property of a hard carbon film and to improve scratch resistance and corrosion resistance by forming the hard carbon film via an intermediate layer contg. the carbide of the metals constituting a base body on a body consisting of specific transition metal or an alloy consisting essentially thereof.
This ornamental member is constituted by forming the hard carbon film 2 consisting of diamond, etc., via the intermediate layer 3 contg. the carbide of the metals constituting the base body 1 having the surface consisting of the transition metal alone of groups 4a, 5a, 6a of periodic table or the alloy consisting essentially of these transition metals on the base body 1. The terminal layer 3 is preferably formed of a mixture composed of the carbide of the metals constituting the base body 1 and silicon carbide and/or hard carbon. The hard carbon film 2 has a specific Raman spectroscopic spectra (details are omitted) and the average grain size of the crystal particle thereof is ≤80 nm. The film is highly dense. The hard carbon film 2 is formed by an ECR plasma CVD method.
