PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an outboard engine 1 having a speed change gear 13 of simple structure that can be made small in size even if it includes a mechanism for changing-over rotation outputs of propellers 5 and 6 to a forward movement and a backing movement.SOLUTION: The outboard engine 1 of this invention comprises the speed change gear 13 that is installed between an engine 11 and a lower gear mechanism 12. The speed change gear 13 includes: a main relay shaft 23 for relaying a power transmitted to an input shaft 14 to an output shaft 15; and a backing relay shaft 24 further relaying the rotational power of the main relay shaft 23 to relay it to the output shaft 15. The main relay shaft 23 is installed with a forward movement slow speed gear 28 and a back movement gear 32, a forward movement clutch 27 for relaying or shutting the power transmittance to the forward movement slow speed gear 28, and a back movement clutch 30 for relaying or shutting the power transmittance to the back movement gear 32. The output shaft 15 is installed with a forward movement output gear 33 engaged with the forward movement slow speed gear 28, a back movement output gear 36 engaged with the back movement gear 32, and a forward movement or back movement changing-over clutch 37 for relaying or shutting the power transmittance to the back movement output gear 36.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
