Title:
OXIDATION OF BENZYL ALCOHOL AND RELATED COMPOUND BY BIOMIMETIC CATALYST
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPH02256641
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain an oxidation product easily in a high yield by a method in which benzyl alcohol is oxidized in a liquid medium by the use of a high activity catalyst of a metalloporphyrine and a specified oxidizing agent while controlling lignin.

CONSTITUTION: Benzyl alcohol such as pertolyl alcohol and a related compound are oxidized in a reaction liquid medium containing 5-40 vol.% of acetonitrile, etc., in the presence of a biominetic catalyst composed of a metalloporphyrine such as manganese porphine, iron porphine which is supported on a solid carrier such as an ion exchange resin and an oxidizing agent such as an inorganic peracid e.g. potassium hydrogen persulfate or an organic peracid such as peracetic acid and monoperphthalic acid which are water-soluble to obtain the objective compound such as 3,4-dimethoxybenzaldehyde and 2-methoxy-5- hydroxymethyl-1,4-benzoquinone.
