To obtain a solid having a sulfonate group or both of a sulfonic acid group and a mercapto group on the surface thereof and, for example, capable of being used in condensation reaction as a catalyst by using a compd. represented by a specific formula as an organosilicon compd.
When an inorg. solid is treated with an organosilicon compd., a solid is based on oxide of which the surface is modified with a difunctional organosilicon compd. and silicate and, as the organosilicon compd., a compd. represented by [(RO)ySi-R'-SO3-]xMx+ and a compd. represented by (RO)ySi-R2-SH are used. In the formulae, R1 is a 1-12C alkylene group, a 5-8C cycloalkylene group or a unit represented by formula I or II, M+ is H+ and, according to circumstances, NH4+ or a monovalent-tetravelent metal ion wherein (x) is 1-4 valency, (y) is an integer of 1-3, R2 is the same as or different from R1 and R is the same or different and methyl, ethyl, propyl or H.
