To provide a packet data service method by which the capacity of a communication channel is used efficiently.
Packet data are transmitted by occupying a channel only for a data transmission period during setup of a call and the occupancy of the channel is released for periods when no data are transmitted. A terminal conducting packet data service transits to a packet idle state 816 when registration of a packet mode is set up in a system access state 814. While monitoring a packet control channel periodically, he terminal confirming whether or not the packet data sent to the terminal itself through a forward packet traffic channel exist and transits a packet busy state 817 to acquire the data when the packet data exist. Furthermore, when the transmission packet exists in the terminal in the packet idle state 816, the terminal monitors the packet control channel, awaits till the terminal receives a right of use of a reverse packet traffic channel, transits the packet busy state 817 when the terminal receives the right of use and transmits the packet data.
