After the direction of a friction surface 4 is adjusted by a Z-axis rotation mechanism 19, and the amount of feed in a Y-axis feed mechanism 18 is adjusted, a grooving cutter 11 travels across the friction surface 4 of a brake pad 1 to form a groove 6 of desired depth on the friction surface 4. Further, in the final stage of grinding processing by a cylindrical grinding wheel 12, in order for the amount of grinding in the direction of thickness of the brake pad 1 to be increased, an X-axis feed mechanism 16 and the Y-axis feed mechanism 18 are operated simultaneously to chamfer 5 the corner parts of the end part 5 of the friction surface 4, and to parallelly grind the friction surface 4 evenly.
