PURPOSE: To improve reliability on page turning actions by setting the movement completing position of a page turning and reading unit at the time of reading and scanning an original at the point of time when a page sucking means reaches the end of the book type original in a reading and scanning direction.
CONSTITUTION: The page turning and reading unit 1 is moved to the reading and scanning direction (a), and a read sensor 13 detects the end P of the book type original O. Furthermore, the unit 1 is continued to be moved by a specified distance and then stopped. At this position, a driving motor is reversely rotated so that the unit 1 is started to be moved and restored to a home position. While the unit 1 is moved to be restored, the page of the original which has been read is turned. The start position of the page turning action of the unit 1 is the point of time when the page sucking means 600 reaches the end P of the original O in the reading and scanning direction, and the page end P of the original O surely corresponds to the means 600.
