A paper feeder for pulling out, with a paper feed roller, the recording paper P from a paper feed tray 41 having a loading plate 53 for loading, thereon, the recording paper P which has an upstream side end in the paper feed direction rotatably supported on a pivot shaft 62 in such a manner that the downstream side thereof in the paper feed direction is elastically raised. A step part 63a for pressing down the downstream side of the loading plate 53 in the paper feed direction when the paper feed tray 41 is inserted in the direction reverse to the paper feed direction, and a sliding part 63 for maintaining the pressed down state, are formed on the paper feed tray 41. When the paper feed tray 41 is set to a device body, the paper feed tray is set beyond the step part 63a.
