Abstract:
PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a paper remainder detecting method and a paper feed unit that both can accurately detect the remainder of paper stacked on a lifting base in a paper feed tray even in such a condition as would make an existent method make an erroneous detection.
SOLUTION: At the timing when a lifting means 14 should lift a lifting base 12, prior to this lifting, an upper limit position detecting means 16 determines whether a top surface 2a of paper 2 stacked on the lifting base 12 is in an upper limit position or not, and a lower limit position detecting means 17 determines whether the lifting base 12 is in a lower limit position or not. The remainder of the paper 2 stacked on the lifting base 12 is recalculated from not only the result of the determination of whether the top surface 2a of the paper 2 stacked on the lifting base 12 is in the upper limit position or not but the result of the determination of whether the lifting base 12 before the lifting is in the lower limit position or not, and if necessary, further from a lifting time measured by a lifting time measuring means 15 or the remainder of paper stored in a storing means 18.
