The paper sheet handling device includes: a carrying passage having a first carrying mechanism and a second carrying mechanism for carrying a paper sheet or the like; a sensor disposed on the carrying passage to acquire information from the paper sheet or the like carried by the carrying passage; and a control part which can control the carrying speed of the paper sheet or the like by the first carrying mechanism and the carrying speed of the paper sheet or the like by the second carrying mechanism. On the carrying passage, the first carrying mechanism, the second carrying mechanism, and the sensor are arranged adjacent to one another in this order. The control part makes the paper sheet or the like forwarding to the sensor part from the second carrying mechanism via the first carrying mechanism contact with the sensor by making the carrying speed of the second carrying mechanism lower than the carrying speed of the first carrying mechanism.
