PURPOSE: To prevent jamming of bank notes or the like from being deteriorated by inhibiting the state by a start means when a detection means detects jamming of paper sheets.

CONSTITUTION: Sensors S1WSn detects jamming of bank notes and gives a detection signal (a) to a main control section 12. An electromagnetic lock 18 is a lock for the door of the device and when the inside of the device is accessed by maintenance or the like, a maintenance button 4b is depressed, the lock is released by a signal (c) and the door of the device is opened. If jamming takes place on the carrying path, any of the sensors S1WSn placed on the part detects the jamming. The detection signal (a) is amplified by a sensor amplifier 15, fed to a main control section 12 so as to light a display lamp L1 thereby informing the jamming. Furthermore, the detection signal (a) is fed to an NOT circuit 13 and then a signal (b) by depression of a jamp reset key 4a is not made effective. Then the person in charge depresses the maintenance button 4b, releases the electromagnetic lock 18, opens the door of the device so as to recover jammed bank notes in the device.
