This paper sheet transport device includes: a first longitudinal transport path 1 for transporting a paper sheet in the longitudinal direction; a sensor 7 for detecting a paper sheet; a sorting gate G1 for sorting the transport state of a paper sheet on the basis of the result of a paper sheet discriminating means 50; second and third longitudinal transport paths 2, 3 for transporting the paper sheets sorted by the sorting gate G1 in the longitudinal direction; a longitudinal-transverse converting part 10 for converting the longitudinal transport path disposed at the terminal end of the second longitudinal transport path 2 to the transverse transport path; and a longitudinal-transverse converting part 20 disposed at the terminal end of bending the transport direction of the third longitudinal transport path 3, wherein the paper sheets are made uniform in surface and back and the conversion to the transverse transport is performed.
