PURPOSE: To obtain a surface paper quality improver which comprises a specific polymer and a specific copolymer at a specific ratio, thus can improve the surface properties and printability.
CONSTITUTION: (A) An acrylamide polymer bearing anionic groups and (B) a copolymer prepared from a hydrophobic vinyl monomer and an anionic vinyl monomer and/or its salt monomer are formulated at a weight ratio of A/B=100/(0.1-100) to give this paper surface quality improver which increases paper surface strength, sizing properties such as water resistance or ink resistance, and improves ink acceptance and smoothness. The amount of the component A, acrylamide and/or methacrylamide, is 50-99 mole %; a vinyl monomer selected from α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acid and dicarboxylic acid; 0.5-30 mole %, and other copolymerizable vinyl monomers, 0-20mole%. The vinyl monomer of the component B is selected from styrenes and alkyl (meth) acrylates, while the anionic monomer is selected from α,β-unsaturated mono- and dicarboxylic acids.
