To obtain a diene polymer or copolymer thereof showing well balance between the raw polymer viscosity and the mixed compound viscosity by allowing a specific polymer to react with a specific tin polyhalide followed by reaction of the product with a specific compound.
A conjugated diene polymer and, when necessary, a vinyl aromatic hydrocarbon monomer are subjected to anionic polymerization in a hydrocarbon solvent in the presence of an initiator of an organoalkali (or alkaline earth) metal to prepare a living diene (co)polymer (A) having active organo- alkali (alkaline earth)metal terminals. The terminals of the living diene (co)polymer (A) are allowed to react with about 0.1-0.7 equivalent amount of a tin polyhalide of formula: RaSnRb (R is an alkyl or the like; X is a halogen; a is 0-2; b is 2-4) per mole of the component A chain thereby linking about 10-70 wt.% of the component A chains. Then, the terminals of the remaining component A are reacted with 0.3-2 moles of hydroxycarboxysilane to stop the chain.
