Abstract:
PURPOSE:To ensure ignition and propagation of combustion of particulates in a circumferential area of a filter by increasing the density of plug members, which prevent exhaust gas from entering the filter, in a central area of the filter, and decreasing the density of the plug members in the circumferential area of the filter. CONSTITUTION:Plug members 7 are arranged so that the ratio of area of the plug members 7 to a unit area of a filter viewed from the upstream side of exhaust gas, that is, the density of the plug members, is larger in a central area 1c of the filter inside the broken line circle than in a circumferential area 1d surrounding the central area of the filter higher. As a result, the density of exhaust gas inlet passages 5 included in the central area 1c of the filter whose exhaust gas upstream ends are open is smaller than the density of exhaust gas inlet passages included in the circumferential area 1d. This makes the seizure of particulates larger in the circumferential area of the filter than in the central area of the filter, thus ensuring the ignition of particulates in the circumferential area of the filter.
