PURPOSE: To realize a short recognition time by detecting the direction difference code train of a pattern boundary line, regarding the correlative value of pattern data on two constant shapes which are 90° out of phase as feature points of a pattern, and decreasing the number of data of a dictionary pattern.
CONSTITUTION: A photoelectric conversion part A reads the pattern optically to obtain an electric signal, which is converted by a preprocessing part B into a digital signal to remove a noise signal; and a border line extraction part C generates a relative difference direction code from the pattern signal as to the border part of the pattern. Further, a feature extraction part D obtain the correlation with two constant form pattern data which are 90° out of phase and a decision part e compares the feature point obtained by the feature extrac tion part D with that of a pattern stored in a dictionary to decide on and output the pattern.
