To provide a pentacyclic ursen type triterpene originating from Japanese plum tree as a physiologically active substance and a process for easily and inexpensively extracting and producing the same.

Water shoots of Japanese plum trees which have been disposed are crushed, dried and extracted with an aqueous solvent to collect the objective pantacyclic ursen type triterpene. When the kinds of aqueous solvents and the extraction and treatment conditions are varied, different pentacyclic ursen type triterpenes are obtained.
