To provide a lubricant for recording media keeping high lubricity under various service conditions, sustaining lubricant effect for a long period of time and affording good transferability, abrasion resistance, durability, etc.

This lubricant to be used for magnetic recording media comprises e.g. a compound of the formula: C18H37CH(CH2COOC10H6OH)COO-Rf- OCOCH(CH2COOC10H6OH)C18H37 (Rf is a fluoropolyether group with an average molecular weight of 2,000).
