Abstract:

To obtain a magnetic assembly which can perform simultaneously the sensing and identification of a magnetic document.

A magnetic assembly 60 includes a permanent magnet (PM) 62 and first and second high-permeability magnetic-pole pieces 64, 66 made of a soft-magnetic substance. Combining the first and second magnetic-pole pieces 64, 66 with the permanent magnet 62, a tapered magnetic circuit with different dimension gaps is formed. The permanent magnet 62 is positioned in a second gap (g) present between the first and second magnetic-pole pieces 64, 66. A magnetoresistive(MR) sensing element 68 is provided in or near the center of a first gap (G) present between the first and second magnetic-pole pieces 64, 66. The first gap G and the MR sensing element 68 are positioned close to a magnetic document to be sensed.
