To prepare the subject composition, capable of imparting homogeneous permanent waves to hair without damaging hair even by repetitive application by making the composition contain a pearl protein hydrolyzate therein.
This permanent waving agent composition contains a pearl protein hydrolyzate in an amount of 0.05-5wt.% based on the total composition in a base containing at least one reducing organic thio compound and/or at least one inorganic sulfite. A commercially available pearl protein hydrolyzate can be used as the pearl protein hydrolyzate. An alkalifying agent, a surfactant, etc., can further suitably be compounded. The resultant composition has excellent waving effects and good conditioning effects and is capable of providing elastic curls and good combing properties and good gloss to hair. The composition, as necessary, can be used as a hair pretreating agent or an intermediate treatment agent.
