PURPOSE: To obtain the subject organic oxide having high polymerization initiator efficiency useful as a polymerization initiator for a styrenic monomer, providing a styrenic polymer having low content of oligomer and high molecular weight, composing a peroxyketal having a cyclic structure.
CONSTITUTION: 2-Methylcyclopentanone is mixed with 70% t-butyl hydroperoxide, 70% sulfuric acid is gradually added while cooling at 5-8°C, the reaction is carried out for two hours and the reaction is further caried out at 10-15°C for two hours. After the reaction is over, the reaction product is washed with water and 5% solution of caustic soda and then with water to give the objective peroxy ketal of the formula (R is 1-5C alkyl) (e.g 1,1-di-t- butylperoxy-2-methylcyclopentane). A styrenic monomer (e.g. styrene) is mixed with the peroxy ketal of the formula as a polymerization initiator, polymerized at 65-150°C polymerization temperature while raising the temperature to give a styrenic polymer having a low content of oligomer and a high molecular weight.
