Abstract:

To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium for extra high density magnetic recording.

The perpendicular magnetic recording medium is composed of a substrate, a ferromagnetic thin film and a Ru thin film or a Ru-based alloy thin film provided between the ferromagnetic thin film and the substrate. It is preferable that the ferromagnetic thin film and the Ru thin film or the Ru-based alloy thin film are provided by being in contact with each other, coercive force of magnetic hysteresis curve measured by applying an external magnetic field in a direction perpendicular to a ferromagnetic thin film surface is ≥25000e, squareness ratio which is defined as a ratio of residual magnetization to saturation magnetization is ≥0.5 and film thickness of the Ru thin film or the Ru-based alloy thin film is ≥1 nm to ≤100 nm.
