PURPOSE: To distribute a polarizing direction corresponding to the position of incident light by distributing the direction of a phase advance axis or the direction of a phase delay axis partially according to a quadrutic function curve or an approximate quadrutic function curve.
CONSTITUTION: The phase difference plate 10 has phase delay axes 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20, and those directions are distribution according to the upwardly convex quadrutic function curve or the approximate quadrutic function curve. Those directions are distributed according to a group of quadrutic function curves which gradually increase or decrease in curvature or approximately according to the group of quadrutic function curves. In a figure, the axis of symmetry of the quadrutic function curve group is on a common center line. The phase difference plate 10 has the phase delay axes and phase advance axes in vertical relation and can be defined by the directions of the phase advance axes instead of the directions of the phase delay axes. The directions of those phase delay axes 12, 14, 16, 18, and 20 are represented as (dX/dy)=(X/2 A) or y=X2/4A-A, where a specific position is the origin of a specific orthogonal coordinate system and A is a constant.
