NEW MATERIAL:The phenoxyacetic acid derivative of formula I (R1 is alkyl, alkoxy or alkanoyloxy; R2 is 1-3C alkyl, halogen-substituted alkyl or alkoxycarbonylalkyl; Y is a group consisting of 1-3 groups bonded with each other and consisting of 1-3 kinds of groups selected from the groups of formula II, formula III, formula IV, formula V, etc.; the carbon labeled with * is asymmetric carbon).
EXAMPLE: (R)-2-[4-(4'-octyloxy)biphenylyloxy]propionic acid ethyl ester.
USE: A liquid crystal material. Useful for attaining various properties necessary for ferroelectric liquid crystal by mixing with a compound having Sc phase or Sc* phase.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula I can be produced e.g. by reacting a compound of formula R1-Y-OH with a new compound of formula VI.
